Dixie Baptist Church and Cemetery. Dixie the freedom colony named after Rev Dick Seale, a black minister who founded the Dixie Baptist church before emancipation. Learn about the unique relationship between Dick Seale and the plantation owner Joshua Seale that can be seen today. Learn about Joshua Seale one of the first white Settlers in Texas and how life existed back then.
Huff Creek School and Cemetery. Come see one of the finest preserved two room Rosenwald schools that was converted into the Huff Creek Cemetery Church. Learn About the origins of the Huff Creek Cemeteries which was founded by the children of an even older freedom colony with a deep history of Spanish Texas before the Texas revolution.
Rock Hill School. This wonderfully preserved one room Rosenwald School served the Rock Hill community for 50 Years. Learn about the husband and wife teachers the “Tukes”.
Mt Union Community. Mt Union is approximately 2,000 Acres of land still owned by the descendents of the 20 Slaves brought to Spanish Texas by Sherrod and Alexander Wright. Learn where these early black and white Texas settlers originated in the US before coming to Texas. Learn how this land has remained in the hands of these black descendents. Visit the meeting hall for the 2,000 descendants who come to MT union every two years. See the historic cemetery, historic homes and ranches that tell a unique and proud American story.
JH Rowe School Memorial. The JH Rowe school memorial in Jasper commemorates the school founded in the 19th Century. Under the leadership of its beloved principal JH Rowe Rosenwald School graduates from across rural Southeast Texas attended this college preparatory school To prepare them for college. Learn the fate of Rowe school when integration occurred in the 1960’s.
